Vanuit de opleiding AV Medewerker op het ROC in Hilversum mogen ieder jaar een aantal leerlingen mee naar het voorbereiden en uitvoeren van de intocht. Nu heb ik tijdens mijn tijd op het ROC behoorlijk wat klussen gedaan, zelfs in Ahoy gestaan, maar de intocht van Sinterklaas is natuurlijk wel een unieke ervaring. En natuurlijk niet te vergeten, ik krijg de kans om heel nauw samen te werken met een van de grootste facilitaire bedrijven van Nederland. Lang verhaal kort, dit was een klus waar ik me direct voor opgaf en waar ik uiteindelijk ook voor uitgenodigd werd.

11 november -- 2 Dagen tot Intocht

Donderdagochtend. Om half zes begint mijn mobiel een vrolijk melodietje te produceren als teken dat ik toch maar eens moet gaan beginnen met wakker worden. Om zes uur springt vervolgens de radio aan en besluit ik toch maar eens uit bed te komen. Even scheren, douchen, stevig ontbijtje naar binnen werken en dan nog even een kwartiertje het ochtendnieuws kijken voordat ik om kwart over zeven richting het Mediapark vertrek.

Vandaag gaan we volgens de planning om acht uur weg, maar het is altijd fijn om nog even een half uurtje bij te kletsen met je collega’s onder het genot van een lekker kopje thee (ben nooit zo’n koffie liefhebber geweest). En met de koude wind die buiten over het Mediapark raast is dat zeker geen overbodige luxe, aangezien het in de haven van Harderwijk waarschijnlijk nog vele malen kouder zal zijn. Na het kopje thee vertrekken we, netjes volgens de planning, om acht uur uit Hilversum met twee volle crew busjes en een materiaalwagen richting Harderwijk.

Een kleine drie kwartier later komen we aan bij de compound tegenover het Dolfinarium, een soort thuisbasis tijdens de intocht die dienst doet als materiaal opslag, kantine en regie. Dan begint het uitladen van de materiaalwagen. Tientallen kisten met honderden meters triax kabel slepen we de wagen uit. In totaal zal er in de loop van die dag ruim 12 kilometer aan kabel door de stad getrokken worden om alle camera’s en speakers aan te kunnen sluiten.

Het Bekabelen van Harderwijk

Om het uitrollen van 12 kilometer kabel zo vlot mogelijk te laten verlopen was de stad onderverdeeld in drie vakken; Geel, rood en blauw.

Vak geel staat voor de kabelroute van de regiewagen naar de haven waar pakjesboot 12 aanmeert. Deze kabels zijn bedoeld voor de twee camera’s op de steiger en de draadloze ontvangers langs de kade.

Vak rood staat voor de kabelroute van de regiewagen naar het marktplein. Deze kabels zijn bedoeld voor de twee camera’s op de markt, de camera in de studio van Wiebertje en de draadloze ontvangers op het marktplein.

Vak blauw staat voor de kabelroute langs de route van de haven naar het marktplein. Deze kabels zijn bedoeld voor de vijf camera’s langs de route en de verschillende draadloze ontvangers langs de route.

Ik en drie andere collega’s waren verantwoordelijk voor het bekabelen van vak geel. Een route die voornamelijk door rustige straatjes liep en maar op twee punten over een straat heen moest.

Het trekken van triax kabel is iets wat je over het algemeen in team verband doet. Afgezien van de talloze bochten waar zo’n kabel doorheen gaat zijn afstanden van meer dan honderd meter bijna niet meer te trekken voor één persoon. De kabel wordt dan simpelweg te lang en te zwaar. Ook om die reden werk je samen en trekken de mensen halverwege alvast een overschot aan kabel achter zich zodat de persoon aan het uiteinde minder gewicht hoeft te trekken.

Het werk ging vrij vlot en tegen de tijd dat de lokale kerkklok twee uur sloeg lagen alle kabels richting de haven, langs de huizen, via een overspanning over de straat heen en in nette bosjes naast de kade. De eerste helft van de dag zat er op en afgezien van de kou en de harde wind viel het nog redelijk mee met het weer. Het was dan ook typisch dat ik net een opmerking maakte over het uitblijven van de voorspelde regen toen ik de eerste regendruppel voelde. De rest van de middag heeft het alleen maar geregend en op dat soort momenten ben je toch blij dat je ooit die waterdichte Northface jas hebt gekocht, want in die kou en nattigheid wil je niet staan met alleen je leren jas.

Tegen een uurtje of half zes zat het werk voor die dag er officieel op. Ik, mijn collega’s, de compound en de rest van Harderwijk waren allemaal volledig doorweekt van de regen. Het was dan ook fijn eindelijk weer in het warme (en vooral droge) crew busje te kunnen klimmen. Pas tegen een uur of zeven was ik thuis. Ik heb gedouched, gegeten en lag nog voor negen uur weer in bed. Wat een dag.

12 november -- 1 Dag tot Intocht

Eén van die leuke dingen van werken bij de TV is dat je dingen ziet die niet veel mensen zien, en dingen weet die niet veel mensen weten. Een voorbeeld van zo’n leuk weetje is dat de hele intocht van Sinterklaas ieder jaar van begin tot eind wordt gerepeteerd. Inclusief het aanmeren van pakjesboot 12 en het begroeten van Sinterklaas. Het is zoiets wat je waarschijnlijk alleen maar weet als je toevallig in de stad woont waar de intocht plaatsvind, maar het blijft een leuk weetje.

Vandaag vindt in Harderwijk de generale repetitie plaats. Om twee uur zal zogenaamd de uitzending beginnen en wordt het hele draaiboek van scene één tot ‘Daag Sinterklaasje’ doorlopen. Mochten er nog dingen fout gaan dan weten we dat in ieder geval voordat de hele handel live op TV komt. Tot die tijd moeten er nog wat dingetjes worden klaargemaakt, want ik en mijn collega’s stonden om acht uur al weer in Harderwijk door te nemen wat er die dag nog allemaal moet gebeuren.

Eén ding had ik in ieder geval al gezien toen we Harderwijk binnen reden. De triax kabels die we de vorige dag zo netjes langs de kade hadden opgebost lagen nu allemaal met plug en al in het water. Op zo’n moment is het maar hopen dat de kabel nog werkt en niet vervangen hoeft te worden, anders moet er zo een paar honderd meter kabel weggehaald en opnieuw neergelegd worden en dat was niet ingepland voor vandaag, laat staan morgen. Dus voor er ook maar iets anders gedaan werd gingen we even kijken bij de kade om te zien wat precies de schade was. De pluggen van de kabels hingen allemaal netjes naast elkaar in het water, duidelijk met opzet door iemand gedaan. Waarom iemand zoiets zou doen is mij een raadsel, maar gelukkig deden alle kabels het nog en werd de planning dus niet heel ernstig verstoord.

Vliegende Keep

Tijdens de lunch kregen alle camera posten een assistent toegewezen. Als camera assistent doe je, tijdens een uitzending, in principe niets meer dan kabels vasthouden en statieven dragen. Belangrijker dan je denkt, de cameraman moet zich immers focussen op het maken van mooie plaatjes en heeft geen tijd of zin om steeds een kabel aan de kant te trappen. Ook bij het verplaatsen van positie A naar positie B moet het statief gedragen worden, de cameraman heeft immers al een loodzware camera op zijn schouder.

Wij als ROC’ers zijn daar natuurlijk uitermate geschikt voor en iedereen kreeg dan ook een camera positie toegewezen waar hij mocht helpen. Behalve ik. Nee, voor mij was een speciaal baantje bedacht, namelijk de vliegende keep. De persoon die constant naar de portofoon luistert, de persoon die bij de eerste tekenen van problemen al met een oplossing moet komen aanzetten. Dat was dus mijn taak. Voor de stoet uitrennen om te checken of één van de camera posities nog iets nodig heeft en reageren zodra er ergens problemen zijn. Dat had wel als voordeel dat ik de hele repetitie grotendeels kon zien tenzij er problemen ontstonden. En gelukkig ging alles tijdens de repetitie zo goed als maar gehoopt kon worden!

13 november -- Dag van de Intocht

Omleiding. Niet parkeren in het centrum. Dranghekken staan al ver voor de haven langs de weg. Sleepwagens rijden af en aan het centrum in en langs de kade bivakkeren de eerste gezinnetjes met hun kinderen al om maar niets te missen van Pakjesboot 12. Het is al flink bedrijvig in Harderwijk om acht uur ‘s ochtends.

Voor ons is er tot 12 uur weinig te doen. Er liggen ditmaal geen kabels in het water en afgezien van een paar matjes die neergelegd moeten worden zijn het voornamelijk de regie en de camera mensen die druk zijn met voorbereiden. Gelukkig is de lokale Bakker Bart de beroerdste niet en zitten we daar lekker warm te wachten en vragen zo nu en dan eens over de porto of er nog iemand hulp kan gebruiken. Het antwoord blijft de hele ochtend het zelfde; nee. Eigenlijk zijn er op de meeste plaatsen al te veel man aan het helpen.

Pas om half twaalf is het voor iedereen tijd om zijn positie in te nemen. Voor mij betekend dat richting de kade waar ik mooi vanuit mijn VIP plekje op de steiger kan meegenieten van de intocht. De stad is inmiddels volgelopen met mensen. Langs de dranghekken staan honderden ouders en kinderen te wachten op een blik op de goedheiligman. Langs de kade staan verschillende scholen en verenigingen die allemaal hun kunstje willen tonen aan Sinterklaas. Het is een gezellige drukte, al ben ik toch blij dat ik die drukte grotendeels mag vermijden dankzij de gele crewbadge die om mijn nek bungelt.

Paniek!

Klokslag twaalf uur begint de uitzending en is Harderwijk live op de TV te zien voor miljoenen Nederlanders. Net als tijdens de repetitie kijk ik stilletjes mee op de steiger hoe de presentator en de burgemeester als twee kippen zonder kop staan te kijken naar een brug waar nog geen speedboot doorheen past. Zelfs als de stoomboot al lang en breed in zicht is voor de honderden mensen langs de kade staan deze twee zich nog steeds af te vragen waar Sinterklaas nou blijft. Oh, wat stom! Ze stonden de verkeerde kant op te kijken! Ach dat kan gebeuren.

Alles gaat zoals het moet gaan en terwijl Pakjesboot 12 begint met aanmeren hoor ik over de portofoon dat er geen signaal meer is bij camera acht. Mogelijke kabelbreuk, niet onrealistisch met zoveel mensen in de stad. Desondanks geen grote ramp, er hangt bij die positie immers een reserve kabel. Maar een halve minuut later hoor ik dat ook die niet lijkt te werken. Dubbele kabelbreuk? Dat zou behoorlijk vervelend zijn en dat is dan ook meteen mijn teken om maar eens iets te gaan doen. Helaas voor mij ligt camera positie acht een behoorlijk eindje lopen van de kade.

Onderweg merk ik hoe gezellig het schijnbaar is langs de route. Aangezien ik over de route mag lopen krijg ik (tot mijn eigen schaamte) regelmatig sinterklaasliedjes toegezongen. Ook de aan het eind van de dag wel bekende ‘Sinterklaaaas! Oh u bent Sinterklaas niet…’ hoorde ik vrij veel. Eenmaal aangekomen bij positie acht blijkt alles gelukkig alweer te werken. De paniek om de reserve kabel was een vals alarm.

Afbreken

De rest van de intocht verliep goed. Sinterklaas maakte zijn tochtje door Harderwijk en kreeg van de kinderen op het marktplein nog een paar liedjes, waarschijnlijk in de hoop dat ze dan extra cadeautjes zouden krijgen. Terwijl Harderwijk langzaam weer leegliep werd de crew in het gemeentehuis getrakteerd op een lekker bakje snert. En geloof mij dat gaat er wel in na zo’n dag.

Voor de bezoekers van Harderwijk en de rest van Nederland is de intocht dan al weer voorbij. Voor ons begint dan echter pas het echte werk., het hele handeltje mag namelijk weer worden afgebroken. 12 kilometer kabel weer netjes oprollen en inladen, het liefst voor zes uur die zelfde avond. Met de hulp van elk crewlid, inclusief alle cameramensen, hebben we heel Harderwijk weer ontdaan van 12 kilometer kabel in minder dan zes uur want om half vijf die zelfde avond ging de laadklep van de laatste materiaalwagen dicht. Een kleine week zijn we bezig geweest om Harderwijk voor te bereiden op de intocht en nog geen zes uur na de uitzending is alles, inclusief de compound, al weer weg. Now that’s teamwork!

Via deze weg wil ik iedereen bij Dutchview bedanken voor een geweldige ervaring. In het bijzonder Bas en Jan die ondanks het drukke schema toch iedere keer maar tijd bleven maken voor de vragen van ons ROC’ertjes. Bedankt jongens! Oh en natuurlijk Bram van der Vlucht omdat ie het hem toch ieder jaar maar weer flikt. Dat je nog vele jaren mag meelopen!

In de nacht van zaterdag op zondag heeft zich een stroomstoring voorgedaan op het Media Park in Hilversum. De aanlevering van de stroom voor de zogenoemde blauwe groep is onderbroken. Delen van gebouwen op het Media Park zaten daardoor zonder stroom vanaf 0.30 uur. Het verbindingencentrum Media Gateway wordt gevoed door een andere groep, waardoor deze niet is getroffen.

Omstreeks 2.30 uur hebben eigenaar TCN en energiebedrijf Nuon het probleem hersteld. Voor zover bekend hebben kijkers en luisteraars geen hinder van de storing ondervonden.

In april was er ook al een storing met de electriciteitsvoorziening. Een groot deel van de internetsites van de publieke omroep werd toen getroffen. Er was ook een storing van zo’n twintig minuten bij diverse tv-zenders. Het signaal naar de kabelaars was weggevallen.

Wat is OnAir OnLine?

In teams van 8 tot 10 mensen is het de bedoeling dat we een crossmediaal format moeten bedenken, produceren en uitvoeren. Een crossmediaal format is een programma idee dat gebruik maakt van meerdere media (zoals internet, TV, etc) en per medium in verbinding staat met een ander medium. Voor OnAir OnLine moet er een pilot aflevering van minimaal 10 minuten geproduceerd worden en een website die het format en het programma ondersteund. Ook moeten de vormgevers in ieder team hun vaardigheden gebruiken om een aantrekkelijk logo, flash animaties en een promotionele poster te maken.

Tegen het eind van het project zal het programma worden gepresenteerd voor een vakjury. Deze jury bestaat uit mensen die al jaren in het media vak werken en dus goed kunnen beoordelen hoe goed het programma is uitgewerkt. Op basis van de beoordeling van deze jury kunnen programma’s genomineerd worden voor verschillende prijzen, genaamd Rocky’s, die worden uitgereikt op de gala avond op de laatste schooldag van het jaar. Er zijn prijzen te winnen op verschillende punten, namelijk;

• Beste Totale Productie (Hoofdprijs)
• Beste Crossmediaal Format (Beste Format)
• Beste Technische Realisatie (Camera, Licht, Geluid, Montage)
• Beste TV Programma (Productie en Uitvoering)
• Beste Vormgeving (Huisstijl, Logo’s, Animaties, Website, Poster)

Mocht het nog niet duidelijk zijn, dit is dus absoluut geen makkelijk project. Samen kunnen werken is absoluut een must en je zult bereid moeten zijn om lang voor en na je officiële schooltijden aan je programma te werken. Je zult uiteindelijk ook je verhaal doen aan een vakjury van mensen die werken bij bedrijven waar je misschien later stage wil lopen. Hier een goede indruk achter laten is dus enorm belangrijk. Je werkt niet alleen aan dit project voor een goed cijfer of een leuke prijs, maar ook voor je toekomst. Jouw inzet in dit project kan mogelijk je volgende stage of zelfs werkgever bepalen.

In het volgende bericht over OnAir OnLine zal ik het gaan hebben over het tot stand komen van ons team, het bedenken van het format en hoe we ongetwijfeld het stoerste item van dit jaar wisten te bemachtigen.

Deze techniek wordt echter ook gebruikt in de filmwereld en veel vaker dan je zou denken. Bij veel scenes waarvan je denkt dat ze buiten op straat zijn opgenomen wordt gebruik gemaakt van chroma key. When it comes to computers I’m set on brands for some reason. Some brands I like for quality, like Nvidia and Enermax, others because I’ve been using that brand for an eternity and never had a problem. Asus falls in that last category, I have been using the Asus brand for years now in most of the desktop computers I have built over the years. Motherboard and video card both tend to be of the Asus brand simply because they are often the first with new gadgets and functionality and, like I said, have never ever failed on me.

When I started looking for a tablet PC specifically I quickly found that although a fairly wide variety of brands and models is available, most of them seem to be an ordinary laptop with a touchscreen slapped onto it. Obviously when you’re looking for a laptop for an advanced piece of hardware on it you can expect the laptop to be modified for it here and there. And while not all manufacturers live up to this expectation, some do stand out. Among which is the R1E.

Going tablet, yes or no?
Before we dive into anything else about this laptop I want to cover a small issue I have with tablet PC’s in general and if you’re the right person to buy one.

Tablet PC’s were originally (and 95% of them still are) aimed for the traveling business man. They are supposedly a great replacement for a notepad, you can bring it with you where ever you go without having a bulky looking laptop on your lap. The argument for a tablet PC in the office is that taking notes (during a meeting for example) becomes so much easier. However you need to consider if writing on a screen is really that much of an improvement over writing in a notebook and typing it in Word later. Especially since you won’t be using the tablet function of the laptop for anything else, is it worth the extra cash? I’m not a business man, but I’d be inclined to say no.

I have no statistics to back up the following claim, but I think that tablet PC’s are more popular in the art community than anywhere else. Being able to draw on the screen is much more significant then being able to write on the screen and it might be worth the extra cash for an artist as opposed to a business man who can just as easily grab a notepad. For artists, it’s a very big leap forward if they are able to sketch in their favorite graphics software.

Before I bought the R1E I read the blog of a business man (which unfortunately I lost the link of) who tried out working on a tablet PC during meetings and such. He came to the conclusion that the process of learning the laptop your handwriting and having a bulky machine with you all the time did not come in as handy as you would at first believe. Of course it had it’s benefits, like being able to check your e-mail on the spot and quick access to notes, but he found that when he was in a meeting he rarely referred to his e-mail and hardly ever had to look at previous notes. Eventually he got rid of the thing and went back to a good old notepad. Moral of the story: think very hard about why you want to get a tablet PC and how you will be using it. The touch screen alone makes any tablet PC about 50% more expensive than their normal counterparts so be sure you will be using it when you decide to get it.

The basics
Let’s get some of the basic stuff out of the way first, such as the R1E’s specifications.

OS: Windows Vista Business Edition
Harddisk: 160GB
Internal RAM: 2GB
CPU: Intel dual core 2200MHZ
Screen size: 13,3″ (widescreen)
Wireless: Built in wireless network connector and bluetooth connector.

Other than those specs it has what you would expect on a laptop. Audio plugs, a DVD rewriter, VGA output and a nifty fingerprint scanner which I will talk about shortly.
Another cool part about this laptop is the swappable drive bay which originaly houses your DVD rewriter but can be swapped for a second battery (included) or a second hard disk (not included). The drive is apparently hot swappable (though I have not yet tested this) so you can just switch things around while you are working.
Just one other thing that is worth noting is the e-SATA port you can use to hook up all your external SATA devices.

User experience.
One thing that immediately came to mind when looking at the specs for this laptop was that 2GB of memory seemed rather low, especially since it was running Vista Business. On top of that you also get a trail version of Norton Internet Security 2008 which isn’t exactly memory friendly. So after installing most of the programs I used I was kind of expecting a significant drop in performance, especially when working on Photoshop but I was pleasantly surprised when the laptop seemed to hold it’s own against the large memory strain. I experience little to no lag when the laptop is booted up completely although I must say that the actual boot process can take quite long. If you need your laptop in quick bursts every now and again I would avoid shutting it down completely and just let it hibernate when you don’t use it.

Safe for the long boot time the rest of the laptop seems to work pretty smooth. As with any laptop these days you get a shitload of free programs and trails pre-installed on your system which you can then decide to keep or not. Internet surfing is not a hassle at all and the built in wireless connector does it’s job just fine at finding and connecting to the right networks. This laptop also has the ability to manually turn the wireless options on and off with the switch of a button. The response time of this switch is excellent and turns your internet connection on or off pretty much directly (depending on circumstances of course).

One slight issue that caught my attention was that the power LED on the laptop blinks softly when the laptop is in sleep mode. Normally there wouldn’t be a problem with this but the various blue LED’s on the laptop are rather bright. You won’t notice this at all during the day but for those of you who keep their laptop in sleep mode during the night will suddenly see a blue glow in their room fading in and out. This can be quickly fixed by just putting something on the LED’s, like a book, but it’s an annoying little detail non the less.

Tablet Style!
On to the important part! The Asus R1E has the awesome ability to flip the screen 180 degrees and then close the screen backwards, this leaves you with something that resembles an oversized PDA. When the laptop is in this mode you will lose your keyboard and touch pad but gain the ability to use your pen to select, click and write. When you flip the screen around the image on the screen automatically turns 90 degrees, forcing you to hold the tablet in a ‘standing’ position. Luckily, for those not so keen on this little feature, you can flip the image back to normal with the push of a button and start working.

Because you lose your keyboard and touch pad when you’re in tablet mode, everything you need to do is done by using the included pen (which is nicely hidden in one of the corners of the laptop). Clicking is done by tapping and writing is done by writing on a little magical post-it note that will make an attempt at reading your poor handwriting. Especially at first it will have trouble but the more you use it the faster it will learn that those hieroglyphs are actually letters and numbers.

Using the pen to draw is remarkably accurate. The R1E is a Penabled tablet PC, meaning it implements the famous Wacom tablet technology and makes it one of the few tablet PC’s out there that supports pressure sensitivity (although you do need to download the drivers from Wacom.com first to enable the pressure sensitivity). Artists will be very glad to hear this I’m sure.
As far as actual drawing goes, to be honest I first expected a tablet PC to be a little off, sorta speak. Especially the small space between the pen and the actual ‘paper’ had me worried that I’d have to learn to use it properly. It surprised me that when I did some test drawings, the results were about as accurate as when I would do it on real paper. Another plus for the artist tablet user!

Last but not least a small detail our dear Asus friends didn’t forget (this is why I like them). As most tablet users know, the tip of a tablet pen will wear off in time and will need replacing. Asus is nice enough to supply you with 5 replacement tips and a nice tool to get the old one out. That should keep you drawing for years to come.

Biometric security measures are slowly being integrated in everyday life and are no longer a thing for top secret government buildings and James Bond movies. Today you can even get your front door to open with your fingerprint if you really wanted to.
In computers this development has been mostly reserved for government agencies but in the past few years we have seen fingerprint scanners popping up on USB sticks and phones for example.

Asus is one of the few companies to bring this technology to a laptop, together with HP who is exploring the same path, and it’s a good idea.
The fingerprint scanner on the R1E works exactly like it should without any major flaws. A pre-installed program lets you program your fingerprints into the system and from that moment on you can use your fingerprint to log into Windows, applications and websites. The only thing you have to look out for is how you swipe your finger when you’re teaching the program. If you swipe your finger with a curve of some sort you’ll have to duplicate that exact curve again to get a match in the future. It’s best to take some time when programming the scanner so you get the easiest positions to scan. For most people this will be the left thumb and the right index finger but take some time and figure out what you like best.

Battery life
An issue with the R1F (the R1E’s big brother) was it’s crappy battery life. User complained about the battery running low way to fast and that it’s durability only decreased after every charge. Unfortunately this problem was not fixed with the R1E as a closer inspection of the battery reveals that it’s the exact same model (R1F model).
My experience is that a fully charged battery will last you about two hours on average and a mere 1 hour and 45 minutes after the first few recharges. Compared to any other laptop this is pathetic and it also makes it the single largest downside of this laptop. Some people I know draw on their laptop for hours on end and having it plugged in to a power socket all the time isn’t nice for mobility. Luckily the previously mentioned hot swappable drive bay offers a solution as it can be used to store a second battery which offers an additional 1,5 hours of battery life bringing the total to 3,5 hours of battery life. That wouldn’t be a problem except that you have to sacrifice your DVD rewriter for it.

So far I have not encountered a battery that can replace the crappy thing Asus put in there but I hope to find it somewhere at some point soon because the current rate of decay will leave the battery useless in a year or so.
Users in the United States apparently can contact Asus about the battery and have it replaced if they really want to.

Conclusion
The Asus R1E is a very decent tablet PC that has all the extras you would expect from a tablet PC. It can handle pretty much all the basic stuff you throw at it like Photoshop and Word without a glitch but mind you that it’s not equiped for gaming.
The tablet part of the laptop works magnificent as does the nifty fingerprint scanner.

The only real downside to this laptop is the battery life and wear. You’d expect to be able to work for a few hours on a laptop without an electrical socket nearby but apparently 2 hours is all you’re getting at most from the original battery which is kind of disappointing but not a huge disaster for most users I’m sure.

Non the less, the R1E is something I can personaly recommend for artists looking for something more then a normal tablet and happen to be looking for a new laptop at the same time. Also for those doubting between a Wacom Cintiq or a tablet PC, go with the tablet PC. Not only is it cheaper (in case of the more advanced Cintiq models), you also get a lot more worth for your money (tablet on screen: $2500,- / tablet on screen + laptop: $2000,-. I rest my case).

This year was no different. As usual the students from the fashion department had to organize a complete fashion show for their practical exam assignment, taking care of clothes, make up, music, choreography, you name it. The exam location for fashion changes each year as far as I know and this year the location was the old Gooiland Theater, right here in Hilversum. Great of course, because that makes it really close to home.

The Stage

Since we had exams earlier that morning, me and the classmates who were also coming to help out arrived at the theater around noon. A lot of the work had already been done; moving heads were already in position above the stage, audio equipment was already up and working and they were just about to begin building the primary stage construction. The idea was to create a sort of banana out of cloth on which we could project colors and shapes using a set of 3000 Watt moving heads and another set of 2500 Watt. Needless to say these things emitted a huge amount of light but the effect in combination with the ‘banana’ was very cool to see. My compliments to the stage designers (probably my teachers… cheers!).

The Spotlights

When the stage was done, all lights had been programmed, every cable taped down and everything was working it was time for the waiting game. Most of us hung around aimlessly while the light guys were doing their best to program the light table in time for the big show.

After about an hour the dress rehearsal started and me and a classmate were sent up to the balcony to operate the two spotlights. I’ll tell you right now that being a spotlight operator is not as easy as it looks since you have to try to predict every single move a person is going to make. Especially the first act was hard to follow since it was a sort of African dance, this guy was jumping all over the place. I’m actually glad I got to see it during the dress rehearsal a couple of times otherwise I would have majorly screwed up during the real performance.

In the end we did good though. We got a lot of compliments from people sitting at the Front of House about how good we spotted for a first time which did make me feel good. It’s always nice to be appreciated.

You Break It, You’re Broke

When the show was over and the audience had left the theater the entire crew started to break the stage (which luckily always goes a lot faster then building it). The ‘banana’ was being torn down again, audio equipment packed up and cables rolled up and tossed in crates.

However in our hurry to be done as soon as possible me and one of my teachers kind of forgot that especially the 3000 Watt moving heads might take a while to cool down again. As we lifted one up and tried to tilt it over, the head had a sort of ‘FUCK YOU’ moment and started twisting and turning in all directions, making us lose our balance and almost dropping the damn thing lens down onto the stage. And just to paint a picture, regular 250 Watt moving heads already cost about € 3000,- a piece. These 3000 Watt moving heads cost about € 15.000,- a piece and we almost demolished one. Quick as I am I managed to save it by quickly grabbing the head and holding it up, but that also came at a price. Since the lamp was still hot I received a small yet very painful burn on my hand which proceeded to bleed for the remainder of the evening. But hey, at least I won’t have to cough up my share of 15 grand.

Holland’s Got Talent

A fun fact about this particular theater is that Holland’s Got Talent was done in this very theater, on the very stage we were working on. I generally don’t like those kind of shows though I must admit the *’s Got Talent shows were a lot more amusing than their Idols and Popstars counterparts, mostly because of the live audience present at the auditions.

It was very fun to see and reconize parts of the theater, such as the place where the jury sat and some spots backstage. Check out the video’s and photo’s below and see for yourself.

Final Thoughts

I have to say it was a very fun project to work on. For the first time I’ve actually worked in a theater and also had a chat with people who work there on a daily basis. Speaking to one of the employees really informed me about how things work in an actual theater.

After the stage was clean and everything was loaded up the entire crew had a few drinks in the theater’s bar. It’s fun to be socializing with your teachers after an event like that, especially because you start to know them from a completely different angle. I hope to participate in a few more projects like this next year. For now all I have to look forward to is building and breaking the school dance, but you will read about that next week.

Today was particularly fun day because today we got to build the stage for the very first time! Together with our teachers from light class we went up to the cafeteria to prepare the stage for a short performance by RED!. We basically had to put the lighting into the stage truss (the construction above the stage) and help out with guiding cables and making sure the stage was ready and safe for the performance.

When the stage is not in use there are generally a few lights on the truss, though not connected to anything. They are mostly there for the show of things and to keep the storage from getting to full. However the lights that are normally up there are generally not used with an actual performance. So before we could put the performance lights in we had to take those other lights out.

When the truss was empty we got together to have a quick look at the light plan. This a top view of the stage and the truss that displays which light is supposed to go where. In this case we were using the standard PAR Lights, MAC 250′s and MAC 300′s. The latter two also being known as Moving Heads since they can pretty much move in every direction and are programmable to even the tiniest little details using a light mixing table.

We spent about four hours getting the lights in position and securing all the cables to the truss. You don’t want to ruin a good stage by random cables dangling from the truss above you. So when all loose ends were literally tied up (or in this case taped down) we could start inspecting all the safety cables.
To make sure a light doesn’t just fall down on someone should it come loose one way or another, every light has to be secured to the truss with a special safety chain or cable. In the case of PAR lights the barn-doors (the flaps you sometimes see on these lights) have their own safety cable.

When we made sure everything was secured as it should be the more experienced light guys could start programming the lights. I watched along a little as they did, but there were so many buttons there that I quickly lost track of what the hell he was doing. In any case, programming those lights is a lot of work.

Before the performance could begin there was only one more thing that needed to be installed: sound. Luckily we were not responsible for providing the sound as RED! brought their own installation for that. We just had to help unload it from the truck and get it up to the stage.

Setting up the audio took the guys only fifteen minutes or so and fifteen minutes after that the show finaly started. Many of the school’s students had gathered in the cafeteria to watch and the good news was: all our lights worked!

It’s pretty cool to see something you’ve worked for hours on come to live like that. It’s to bad it doesn’t last, tomorrow we have to take the entire thing down again. It’s been a very educational experience though and I hope we have many more projects just like today.

I had this problem myself. Especialy because my console is inside a cabinet it got hot very fast so I would hear the fans goig in less then 10 minutes of gaming. Wanting to silence the damn thing I decided to look for solutions on the internet and quickly found a guide to hacking your 360′s fan. Hacking might not be the right term though, it’s more like replacing.

Anyway after ordering the fan online I got to work on my Xbox using the above guide as reference. I didn’t have the unlock tool they had handy here so I had to use a screwdriver to pry things open here and there. It wasn’t as easy as the guide made it out to be (though the unlock tool might have made things a lot easier, I dunno). To open up certain areas of the Xbox I had to use some force which resulted in some minor damage to the back of the case. It’s not really a problem since you don’t see it anyway, but it’s still anoying that you have to damage your console just to open it up.

But once it was open replacing the fan was easy. Take the old one out, put the new shiny one in and put the entire box back together. To my own surprise the thing actualy still worked when I turned it on again. The quality of the fan was a bit disappointing, as I had hoped it would be even quieter then it is. But it’s absolutely an improvement over the noisy fan that comes standard with the Xbox 360.

You can order the fan, toolkit and unlock kit at this store. And while you’re there also have a quick look at all the fancy cases and mods they have there. I’m considering replacing the case sometime. White is about the worst color for any console.

As it happens I’m not your average computer geek because I’m also a gamer, which makes me an ultra super mega computer geek in some cultures. And because I’m a gamer I happen to have an X-Box 360 standing by in my livingroom. And wouldn’t you know? Microsoft is the greatest because you can tell your X-Box to connect to the Media Center on your computer and stream the music from there. The indexing takes some time if you have tons and tons of music, but when it’s done you can just sit on the couch, look for an album and press… wait a minute where’s that folder I had there?

Yes, like about every other multimedia device out there (be it an iPod, MP3 player, MP4 player or whatever) Windows Media Center (and subsecuently the X-Box 360) use MP3 tags to identify which song goes into what folder and is connected to which album. If all the songs in the same folder don’t have the same tags then Media Center is going to disregard the fact that they are in a folder together and just throw them all over the place. And come on, who bothers editing the tags on an MP3 file when they rip the music off their completely legal store bought CD? Nah! You just throw that MP3 file in there with the other MP3 files you ripped from that completely legal store bought CD!

However if you do not want to spend ages finding five songs that are supposed to go together in an album you might want to consider propperly tagging your music from now on. With the right software it’s pretty easy and fast to do. Tagging one album takes less then five minutes and it will save you such a headache when you load them up on your MP3 player later! Just my little piece of advise concerning music.

It sucks! But I guess nothing has only fun sides. Every job has it’s downside and soldering is the downside on this job. We need to be able to do quick repairs should something break and if that involves some minor use of a soldering iron then we are expected to fix it.

However 90% of our classroom has no idea how to do it. I did it as a kid a long time ago but I do not remember it being this bloody difficult. How hard can it be to solder two pieces of metal together? Okay in all honesty it’s not the soldering per cé that difficult, it’s the bending and keeping things in place that’s driving me insane. Whenever I try to bend something a certain way the metal just shouts: “FUCK YOU!” and seems to go live a life of it’s own. And when I do finally get it bent the way I want it I have to keep a tiny piece of metal against another tiny piece of metal and solder it together. You do know metal conducts heat quite quickly don’t you?

So yea, I haven’t burned myself yet though and I hope it’s not going to happen but the assignment they gave us was just retarted. We have to make the letters of our class code with metal and each letter can only be a little over 1 inch high. It’s a precision task like you wouldn’t believe and it’s really trying my patience. Today we have another six hours of soldering ahead of us so… more on this lovely subject later.

International Currency & The Internet

A little something offtopic I wanted to bring to everyone’s attention are the downright scams companies are trying to pull off on the internet these days. I’m sure everyone knows what I mean. An American based company sells their product in America for 50 dollars BUT when you try to buy that product from Europe they suddenly change the dollar sign and change it to a euro sign. So 50 dollars suddenly became 50 euro’s and at the current exchange rate I won’t have to tell anyone that’s some major bullshit, especialy because over here we ALSO have to pay 19% taxes over those 50 euros.

Let me just give you the math on a 50 dollar product right here:

$50,- = €38,- at the current exchange rate. (If I were to pay in dollars I would save 12 euro’s.)

€50,- = $65,- at the current exchange rate. (The selling company just made 15 dollars extra!)

19% taxes over €50,- = €9,50.

Which would mean that instead of saving €12,- I’d be paying €21,50 EXTRA! Yea that’s easy money, isn’t it. I’m surprised something like this is even legal.

Anyway, the reason I’m bringing this up now is because I just noticed to biggest scam in history when it comes to the above matter. My Norton account expired so I went to the Norton website to renew it when I noticed that a new version (Norton 2009) had been released. I decided to upgrade from 2008 to 2009 and checked how much it would cost for an existing costumer to renew his subscription AND upgrade his software. After some searching this appeared to cost me a mere $50,- for a 1-year subscription + Norton Internet Security 2009.
I then decided to take the easy road and upgrade my subscription from my Norton software so I was sure everything went as it should. The software directed my to the Dutch version of the Norton website which was no surprise, until I saw the Dutch prices. On this version of the website I suddenly had to pay €108,- to renew my subscription and that didn’t even include the new software! I literally started laughing, this was absolutely ridiculous!! Luckily I’m keen enough to find a way around this bullshit and just bought the 50 dollar package from the website. It came as no real surprise that my Norton software then started to complain about the code being invalid but a quick stop to the live helpdesk fixed that problem. Not only did they give me a working code for the 2009 subscription, they also added 7 days to it for the trouble.

So this is just a general warning to everyone who regularly buys things overseas: Put some time into checking if you can pay with dollars instead of your own currency, even if you have to do some effort. It can save you a LOT of money!
