Extension Cables… From Hell!

In the AV lessons yesterday and today our teacher decided to teach us a thing or two about making electrical extension cables. Something like that would seem a rather easy task for someone with even a mere knowledge of cabling. However it isn’t as easy as it seems.

Everything has to be cut to the exact right size. The outer shell has to be secured to the socket, the inner wires have to be cut to an exact length so that they bend as little as possible between the shell and the socket. And when stripping the outer shell you have to make SURE you don’t accidently cut into the cables underneath or you can start over.

And that’s exactly what kept happening to me. Each time I stripped the shell I cut into the wires underneath and could cut that entire piece off and start over. It’s funny because the guy I was working together with was working on the other end of the cable and had the exact same problem. The result?

Well we started with a cable that was 10 meters long. By the time we were done we were down to 8. But my second try (today) went a lot better since I managed to complete an entire cable by myself within half an hour (vs the 4 hours it took us yesterday to make 1 cable with two people).

So much for today’s school adventures.
